How to Keep Your Boarding Place Cool During the Sri Lankan Hot Season
With temperatures soaring during the dry months, keeping your room cool without driving up your electricity sub-meter bills can feel impossible. Fortunately, simple hacks can make a huge difference in small spaces like boarding rooms or annexes.
Keep Blinds Closed During the Day
Prevent solar heat gain by drawing thick curtains or blinds closed during peak sunny hours (10 AM to 3 PM). Keeping the direct sunlight out will prevent the air inside from heating up.
Use a Wet Towel in Front of the Fan
A simple evaporative cooling trick is placing a damp towel or a bowl of ice directly in front of your table fan. The air passing through will feel noticeably cooler.
Optimize Ventillation at Night
Once the sun sets, open all opposite windows and doors for a few minutes to create a cross-ventilation breeze. This flushes out the trapped warm air and replaces it with cooler night air.
